I love Starbucks Frappuccino Coffee Drinks, and I've recently discovered the Gevalia Sweet & Creamy Iced Coffee for my Tassimo Brewer. I love the idea of being able to keep cold brewed coffee in the fridge, so this was an offering I could not pass up.
The idea of a cold coffee press confused me. I always thought that iced coffee was hot coffee that you let cool off. If you're wondering what makes this coffee press special for cold brew, the answer is not much. This coffee press does come with a second top to keep the pitcher sealed while you let it steep over night, but I am pretty sure your iced coffee will survive if you don't have a special steeping cover. You can use this coffee press for hot coffee as well, and I'm sure if you have a coffee press, it can be used for cold.
For cold brew, with this or any other coffee press, you mix cold water with coffee grounds and let it sit overnight. Because you are starting out with cold water, you have to put a little more effort into mixing than you would with a hot brew. I was surprised at how much stirring I had to do before the spoon came out relatively clean. I let mine sit for 24 hours, and actually gave it an extra little stir at the 12 hour mark.
The only thing that really matters in a coffee press is the pressing mechanism. There really isn't much you can do to a container that is going to effect the strength or taste of the coffee you use, unless you are getting a plastic taste from the container itself. (My first attempt was with Starbucks Vanilla Coffee) If the strength is not to your taste, modify the amount of grounds or the steeping time. The pressing mechanism on this press worked great. For my first pitcher, I only did a half batch, and I was concerned before I pressed because there were grounds on the wall of the container. The press did a wonderful job of clearing off the sidewall and straining the coffee. It was simple to use. I love that there are two tops for pitcher. If after your first press you don't find your coffee strong enough, you have the easy option of removing the press, giving it a stir, and letting it sit for a few more hours in the sealed container. Having two covers also makes it obvious whether your beverage is ready to drink, or not.
