Customer Review: Great product!
Summary: 5 Stars
I drink a lot of tea but, even so, thought this French press might be too big. Not true! In conjunction with the T-Fal "Vitesses" 1.7 liter kettle, I can make enough tea in about 10 minutes to last a whole day. Start 1.5-1.7 liters of water on the way to boiling, pour about a teaspoon of Assam tea (I can recommend the delicious and very affordable Swad brand from Patel Brothers USA) into the French press, fill with boiling water in about 5 minutes, let it steep another 3-4 minutes, pour out into vacuum bottles. Any remaining tea goes into the teacup!
Pros:
1. The fragile glass is fairly well protected against accidental contact with hard objects (which was the demise of my previous French press)
2. The stay-closed thumb valve reduces chances of spills
Cons:
1. While holding the thumb valve open to pour out the hot liquid, there is a tendency for steam burns. Pouring for short periods minimizes the problem
2. The upper edges of the spout are very sharp! Round those edges with a file on yours as soon as you decide to keep it, to prevent nasty accidental cuts.
Like other reviewers, I had trouble opening it the first time, and offer these precise instructions: 1. rotate the top counterclockwise about 1/2 inch until internal tabs line up with their slots; 2. pull the entire top straight up (either by the knob or by grasping the sides of the top). It's hard to move but there's nothing besides friction holding it in.
There's a considerably more expensive double-wall French press that appears identical that I resisted on the basis that steeping for only a few minutes makes insulation a non-issue. I highly recommend this item.
