Ok, maybe "best kitchen gadget ever" is going a bit overboard, but I do seriously love this little appliance. Both my daughter and I are tea drinkers, and we had two options in the mornings: put on a regular tea kettle which can take a long time and has to be watched, or, to save time, stick a cup of water in the microwave, which is not all that good because the water gets hot, but never really gets to a boiling point.
With the Bodum Bistro, we fill it, turn it on, then take those last few minutes we need to get ready for work (or school) while it does its thing. The water boils properly, then turns off automatically, so we aren't rushing to the kitchen to shut it off. We both get our tea, and we're happy.
The Bistro is fast, also. For a full 34-Ounce pot, it took 5:36. Compare this to our tea kettle which takes three times as long to boil the same amount of water. For smaller amounts of water, obviously, the kettle takes less time. About 3:00 for 17 oz of water, which is the same amount of time I was putting the same amount of water in the microwave for. Yet, as I said, the Bistro fully boils the water, which is really safer when you're making tea.
The fact that you can take the actual pot off the base and carry it around without dragging a cord around with you is also a nice bonus.
If there's a downside to this pot, it's that it's not really insulated, so, if you boil water, you should use it right away. It can't sit for a long time and still be hot. I've come back to it an hour later, and it's been warm, but not hot enough to make more tea. Also, there's a time just before the actual boil of the water when the Bistro can get very noisy. But other than that, it's an outstanding product.
Next year, my daughter will go away to college, and at that time, I will definitely be buying another Bistro for her to take with her. We like the product that much.
