Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Bodum Brazil Unbreakable 8-Cup Coffee Press, BlackCustomer Review: Excellent Press if You Care for it Properly Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using my press for over two years now and have had no problems yet. I have gone through at least 5 glass French presses in the few years before buying this one.
I have read many of the reviews and there are a number of them that point out leaking, the bottom coming off, etc. I have not had these problems and I use this press everyday, unless I go out for breakfast (about once every other week). I ALWAYS wash it by hand and have never put it in a dishwasher. I think a dishwasher is probably too hot for the seal and glue (or whatever) that keeps it together at the base. The only thing on mine are some hard water deposits on the outside where the beaker fits into the base.
The filter has darkened with the coffee residue but that doesn't bother me since I only use it for coffee. If I overfill it the filter does have to be tilted in which may put some grinds in the coffee. I usually just pour these out immediately before pressing. Generally, there are very few grounds that go around the filter in this case.
I live in Albuquerque, NM at 5000 feet elevation and I also let it sit longer than 4 minutes, but that's my preference. Another reviewer mentioned high altitude may need longer brewing - perhaps. Most importantly is to be sure the grind is properly coarse. One great private coffee purveyor here in town always grinds my French press coffee way too fine. Normally French press should be a 9 or 10 grind, and this purveyor grinds it around a 4 or 5. This ends up with way too much silt in the bottom of your cup and can be bitter if brewed too long.
The normal recipe is 9 or 10 grind for 4 minutes. This press makes two Starbucks mug-sized cups of coffee per press (about 32 oz).
Description of Bodum Brazil Unbreakable 8-Cup Coffee Press, BlackNever worry about broken beakers again. If you use your french press every day at home and travel, a broken beaker is inevitable. With the Unbreakable Brazil 8-Cup Coffee press, you can safely travel with your press and not worry about breakage. The beaker is made of polycarbonate, one of the strongest plastics around. The press itself, is also plastic, making the entire unit very durable. This press includes a special filter designed to work especially with the plastic beaker, while reducing the amount of sediment in your coffee. The Brazil works on the same principle as all coffee presses. It combines coarse ground coffee with water that is just off of a boil. This combination along with 4 minutes of extraction time allows the oil and acids that give the coffee it's flavor to be completely extracted so you get a balanced and flavorful cup of coffee each time. After 4 minutes, just press and enjoy. There are no paper filters to soak up the oils, and cleanup is a snap. The 8 Cup Press is 32 oz and yields 8 - 4 oz.cups of coffee. Bodum?s Brazil press utilizes unbreakable polycarbonate for its carafe, which makes this model an excellent choice for campers, students, or travelers who like to make fine coffee on the road. The press method is considered by many aficionados to be the best way to make a perfect cup of coffee, since no paper filter absorbs and removes the essence of the flavor. To make coffee with the press, remove the plunger/top ensemble, add coarse ground coffee to the glass carafe, add hot (but not boiling) water, stir with a spoon, and position the top and plunger in place. Allow the coffee to brew for about four minutes before slowing pushing down on the plunger. Pushing too hard or too quickly may cause hot liquid to squirt out. The domed lid features a slotted spout cover for pouring. To clean, simply scoop out the used grounds and pop the entire unit into the dishwasher. This 32-ounce model makes eight four-ounce dessert cups of coffee. Made in Denmark, the press measures 8-3/4 by 5-1/4 inches and comes with a plastic coffee measuring spoon. --Ann Bieri
