Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Bodum New Kenya 34-Ounce Coffee Press, BlackCustomer Review: The ONLY way to make coffee Summary: 5 StarsFriends love my coffee. I don't buy Folgers and I take the time to make it in a French press. This is by far the best way to make a cup of coffee. I bought this unit as a replacement for the carafe that I dropped. Strangely the carafe is more expensive than buying a new press. It takes about 10 minutes to turn out a "pot" of coffee which is about 30 ounces. Five for boiling and five for standing.
Newcomers to presses: Don't drink the last sip!!!
Customer Review: Great Product for the Gormet Coffee drinker Summary: 5 StarsDisassembles for easy clean-up. Super simple to use! Was much lower in price than in local stores too.
Customer Review: Nice hot coffee and a good "green" coffee maker Summary: 4 StarsI bought a French press to replace my drip coffee maker, not because I hate drip coffee, but because I wanted to stop wasting disposable filters.
So, of course, I went on Amazon to see what the top-selling models were. And I bought this instead of the Bodum Chambord as this model was less than half the price (not sure how long that will be the case) and still had good reviews. The major cost savings are in the use of a plastic handle and holder (all one piece) for the body and the lid - the glass and metal plunger appear to be the same as the other Bodum models. One reviewer mentioned this model uses a plastic nut in the plunger assembly. I verified that, but really, it seems highly unlikely that nut will be a failure point.
Their use of plastics is fine in my book. This model feels sturdy and well put together. Plus, matte black plastic like this is a little easier to clean (in my opinion). The design is also quite unique, making this visually distinct from all the other French presses out there.
As another reviewer pointed out, the glass fits pretty snugly into the holder and you should be careful when separating the two - it takes a good bit of effort, starts to move a little, then suddenly comes apart. My advice is to simply reverse which way you hold it to take it apart. I think the general instinct is to pull the plastic body towards you in one hand and the glass away from you in the other hand. That brings the risk of flinging the glass out of your hand. Instead, pull the glass towards you and pull the plastic body away from you. If the holder goes flying, no problem - it's plastic.
Maybe this is a non-issue though as separating the two isn't necessary for cleaning unless you happen to get some grounds spilled over the sides.
Also, some people mentioned it doesn't keep the coffee hot. I haven't had this problem, though I always heat my water on the stovepot in a pot. If you just heat water in the microwave, it doesn't get nearly as hot, and yes, it will only be "warm" after letting the coffee sit for 4 minutes to brew. So skip the microwave.
And, oh yeah, it makes good coffee :) And no more paper filters so I'm very happy.
Customer Review: Best coffee Summary: 5 StarsMakes the best coffee i have ever had....i can even drink it without 1/2 & 1/2
Customer Review: Great Coffee Maker Summary: 5 StarsThe New Kenya Coffee Press makes the best coffee we've ever had. We never use our Braun coffee maker anymore. This New Kenya Coffee Press is easy to use, easy to control the strength of the coffeee, not really more trouble than a coffee maker, and makes 4 great cups of coffee at a time. Only drawback is the coffee cools off quickly so one needs to drink it quickly or reheat it in the microwave.
